CCR&R's Awareness & Prevention (AP) focus works with child care professionals across Tennessee to help protect children from abuse and neglect. Through trauma-informed training, including Stewards of Children® by Darkness To Light, and real-world tools that fit into daily practice, we are helping create a culture of vigilance, support, and advocacy across early learning settings.

Grow Your Expertise

Early Language & Literacy Specialization

The Early Language & Literacy (ELL) Specialization helps child care professionals strengthen communication, literacy, and social-emotional development through individualized coaching and evidence-based practices. Throughout the program year, participants engage in three core components—LENA Grow, Learning Language & Loving It™, and DECA—to build practical skills that support children's growth and create language-rich learning environments.

LENA Grow

LENA Grow helps child care professionals strengthen responsive interactions and increase meaningful conversations with children.

Through coaching, reflection, and practical strategies, participants create language-rich environments that support communication and early brain development.

DECA helps child care professionals strengthen children's social and emotional development through observation, reflection, and intentional support. Participants learn strategies that build resilience, positive relationships, and protective factors that support lifelong success.

Learning Language & Loving It™

Learning Language & Loving It™ helps child care professionals build children's language skills through everyday interactions and routines.

Participants learn practical strategies to encourage conversation, expand vocabulary, and create meaningful opportunities for communication throughout the day.

Awareness & Prevention Coaches

Our Awareness & Prevention (A&P) Team is composed of TN CCR&R coaches from across the state, united by a shared commitment to protecting children and strengthening communities through education, advocacy and prevention. Each A&P team member serves in a specialized role, bringing expertise and passion to child abuse prevention efforts statewide.

While serving in these Awareness & Prevention roles, all A&P Navigators and A&P Ambassadors continue to work in their primary positions within TN CCR&R. Their A&P roles are additional leadership and service responsibilities, allowing them to extend their impact in child abuse prevention while remaining actively engaged in their primary roles.

A&P Navigators are authorized instructors through Darkness To Light and are authorized to facilitate Stewards of Children facilitator workshops. In addition to leading these trainings, Navigators provide child abuse and neglect trainings and provide guidance, mentorship, and support to A&P Ambassadors ensuring consistent , high-quality education and outreach efforts across the state.

A&P Ambassadors are certified Stewards of Children facilitators through Darkness To Light. They also serve as outreach representatives for awareness & prevention efforts. Ambassadors provide education on child abuse and neglect, raise community awareness, and help extend prevention resources to early childhood professionals, families, partners and stakeholders across the state.
